The amethyst stone is the purple variety of the quartz stone. It is an extremely and popular stone and very affordable thanks to its widespread availability. The name originates from the Greek language, amethystos, and when translated means “not drunk”! There is folklore that the stone wards off the effects of alcohol but a more likely explanation is that the name refers to the colour of the stone. Amethysts have always been favourites of the jewellery maker and necklaces with pendants are as popular as ever.

Amethyst is also the birthstone for February and even today is considered a stabilising force. Amethyst has also always been associated with royalty. The purple colour is a royal colour and was an expensive dye to produce. Amethysts have also been found in archaeological
remains back as far as the ninth century where they were used as sceptres and set into crowns and breastplates. There is also a large amethyst stone present in the British Crown Jewels today.

Giving an amethyst as a gift is considered a symbol of power and protection. It is also said to have the power to overcome difficulties. Giving an amethyst to your loved one is reputed to strengthen your bond, so for this reason it is ideal as engagement or anniversary jewellery. The amethyst stone is stunning and looks equally well when set against gold, white gold or silver. It works particularly when set as earrings or a pendant. When set in a pendant style it can be sat alone or with other gems, such as diamonds. No matter which way you wear amethyst they are always a stunning gemstone and will certainly make the wearer feel like royalty!
