Birthstones are gemstones that have been allied to the different months of the year. Throughout history gemstones and semi-precious stone have been associated with different events and attributed different meanings. There are gemstones that are associated with each of the planets in our solar system. There are also stones that are associated with days of the week, star signs, wedding anniversaries and of course, birthdays. All birthstones have meanings, here are a few of the more popular ones! They have changed over time, however, finally in 1912 the National Association of Jewellers standardised the stones that we know and recognise today.

The modern birthstone for January is the Garnet and this stone represents consistency, perseverance and good health. The modern birthstone for February is the Amethyst and this stone represents sincerity, security and peace of mind. The modern birthstone for March is the Aquamarine and this stone represents beauty, honesty
and loyalty. The modern birthstone for April is the Diamond and this stone represents purity, invincibility, good fortune and innocence. The modern birthstone for May is the Emerald and this stone represents faith, courage, foresight and success in love. The modern birthstone for June is the Pearl and this stone represents tranquillity, innocence, longevity and health.

The modern birthstone for July is the Ruby and this stone represents contented mind, success, devotion and integrity. The modern birthstone for August is the Peridot and this stone represents conjugal felicity, fame, dignity and protection. The modern birthstone for September is the Sapphire and this stone represents love, mercy and victory. The modern birthstone for October is the Opal and this stone represents happiness and truth. The modern birthstone for November is the Yellow Topaz and this stone represents fidelity, providence and good luck. Finally, the modern birthstone for December is the Blue Topaz and this stone represents prosperity, piety and courage.
