Non diamond engagement rings are grabbing a share of the market as people are slowly beginning to sway away from the traditions. These days, a contemporary ring that excels in aesthetics and affordability gets more second looks that mostly converts to sale.
The bevy of engagement rings that line up in jewellery store glass cases often split into two emotional paths – men’s extreme confusion and women’s excitement. Since women will mostly be the recipients of the rings, their preferences should be the major consideration. Diamonds will always get the oooh-aaah reaction and will make her feel really special but there are women who don’t really put great emphasis on the stone. The more romantic ones dwell on the intention behind the ring and the stones just serve as a bonus.
The smorgasbord of non diamond alternatives includes fake diamonds, sapphires,
emeralds, and other semi precious stones. The most popular in the list is the fake diamond, which has two types: the cubic zirconia and moissanite.
The cubic zirconia or zirconium oxide (ZrO2) is the oldest type, discovered in 1932. It started as a diamond alternative for engagement rings in 1976. Looking at the cubic zirconia, you will get the same luster and physical appearance but it is cheaper than the real thing. The major setback is that it does not have the reflective and refractive nature of the diamond.
The mossanites are relatively new compared to the cubic zirconia. These are fake gems that exhibit a more realistic diamond look than the zirconia. Mossanite or silicon carbide costs more than the cubic zirconia but it reflects and refracts light more effectively. The downside aside from being easily detected by diamond experts is that the mossanite does not have the clarity that is one of the best things about real diamonds.
