Working with fused glass art can be both fun and satisfying experience. Making your own jewelry is even better. Here are instructions to making your own fused glass jewelry.
First is to cut your glass using a glasscutter in the shape you desire. It is important to remember fused glass works best at a height of 6mm. So layer at least 2 pieces of 3mm of glass on top of each other. Make sure that each glass piece have the same Coefficients of Expansion (COE) which is the rate of expansion and contraction of each glass piece at the same temperature. Otherwise the glass will not melt at the same time.
Hold the glass pieces on the edges so as not to smudge the glass. The smudge like a fingerprint will show on the finished product if you do.
Next, decide on how long you wish to fire your glass pieces. Do you want a Tack Fuse or a Full
Fuse. Knowing how long you wish to fire your glass pieces will determine the temperature you would need to use. A tack fuse has a different temperature range versus a full fuse and the glass pieces will remain in the shape that you cut it. With a full fuse which uses a higher temperature, the glass pieces will melt and round out to a circle or oval shape.
Fire up the kiln and maintain the temperature around 1175 - 1250 for 10 - 25 minutes. At these temperatures, the pieces of glass will get an even temperature and the center will begin to fuse. Place the glass pieces in the kiln. After the glass pieces have fused according to your specifics, allow the pieces to slowly cool or annealing.
Finally, when your fuse glass piece is ready, using some jeweler’s glue fasten a piece of looped artistic wire behind the fused glass piece. That’s it! You have just made your first home-made jewelry.
