Tribal jewellery or ethnic jewellery as it is sometimes referred to covers a
range of items. Any type of jewellery from a particular continent or
culture can be referred to as tribal. Even the name tribal evokes images of
cultures and peoples steeped in history. Tribal necklaces are just one
facet to this amazing type of jewellery manufacture.
There is one tribe in central Asia that has a style of jewellery that is
both distinct, and unique, there are the Turkoman. This tribe use antique
silver, as their material of choice and this jewellery is becoming rare.
This is chiefly because buyers are realising its true value. It is mainly
comprised of silver pendant type necklaces with an ornamental and elaborate
design.
These pendants are often set with carnelian stones or red glass in
and round or oval shape.
Of course, there are other types of tribal jewellery from other cultures.
Perhaps the best way to experience tribal and ethnic jewellery is to buy an
antique piece rather than a reproduction. Buying an original piece of
jewellery is buying a piece of history and carrying on its tradition. This
is especially true if you buy eye beads, which in the past were used to ward
off evil spirits and protect the wearer from harm.
On the market today you can find the very popular and colourful Venetian
beaded necklaces or perhaps you would prefer something more substantial.
Chunky style necklaces with pendants are also widely available, with or
without precious stones.
