Jewellery designing and making is like it was never before. Centuries ago, goldsmiths were skilled craftsmen in the art of jewellery making who passed on their skill in their family from one generation to the next. Jewellery making never held any such appeal for people, as it was a task for the common people. Now all that has changed, people view jewellery making in a different light. Now it is referred to as an art, where an artist creates contemporary jewellery designs and often displays them in galleries across the country or across the world. The freedom to unleash their creativity has given way to a whole new art of contemporary jewellery. Contemporary jewellery is not a very old form of jewellery, it is hardly half a century old, and is still in its refining stage. Contemporary jewellery is not a refined form of jewellery. Rather it is modern day jewellery, which is up to the jewellery
maker to change the materials they use, or the design they make the jewellery in.

Contemporary jewellery exhibitions are fairly popular in art galleries and attract jewellery makers. But contemporary jewellery is still not a popular form of jewellery worn by men or women across the world. In many countries like France, that are deep rooted in their French traditions, it has been very difficult for them to emerge from those traditions and move into the field of contemporary jewellery. But slowly and gradually by the 1970s, France has also started in to the field of contemporary jewellery. The art has evolved and been appreciated there as well.

Contemporary jewellery is not necessarily expensive, nor necessarily cheap. It falls in all price ranges and made of varying materials. It is rather a fashion statement for models and actors, to be worn in their events. This has been a reason as to why it has become fairly popular.
