Body jewellery is an ancient tradition reviewed into the recent times. It is considered highly fashionable among the younger generation to have a number if piercing on their body wearing body jewellery. For the men it gives them an edgy and rugged appearance, which they want to portray. For the women it’s a way of enhancing their appearance. For many it is a personal statement, and in many families in the West it is looked down upon, and that drives rebellious youngsters to try it. For many in the Middle East, it is a family tradition that is carried from generation to generation.

In many cultures and religions body jewellery is an important part of a person's appearance for centuries. Now in the later part of the 20th century body jewellery has caught up in the fashion trends and is now increasing in demand. The human body is viewed as a piece of art and body jewellery is used to adorn it.
