The Egyptians placed a lot of importance on certain objects and colors that were considered sacred. The Egyptians used gold for many various purposes, but the main purpose it was used for was in the making of jewellery. But, not just jewellery for the living, Egyptian jewellery was also specially designed using special colored stones to dress the corpses of the deceased who were place in tombs. These pieces of Egyptian jewellery were said to hold religious importance and mythical powers of bringing peace to the soul of the dead. One of the interesting things to note is that Egyptian jewellery makers did not generally use precious stones in jewellery making, but rather used colored glass imitation of jewels, because for them certain colors held great religious importance.
Egyptian jewellery was not only worn by women, but also men the same way. It was worn to enhance the beauty
of the men and women, but, also most importantly to protect them from evil. The Egyptians believed that special symbols and colors held mystical powers, and that is why they were used in the Egyptian jewellery to protect the wearer from evil and grant them special powers. If you happened to ever visit an Egyptian jewellery exhibition at a museum you will notice that the jewellery is rich in colors, and full of symbols. The most popular symbol was the scarab beetle which was extensively used in Egyptian jewellery making. The scarab beetle symbolized rebirth and therefore held great meaning for the Egyptians.
Egyptian jewellery today is not made exactly the same way, as time has passed the form has been modified. The necklaces and bracelets are not as heavy as they used to be made for the kings and the queens. But the symbols and the coloration are still carried in modern day Egyptian jewellery as this is the tradition that makes it unique.
