Pearls are classed as gems but are formed in a totally different way to any other type of gemstone. They are formed when a piece of sand or grit finds its way inside the shell or a mollusc. The mollusc then builds up a protective layer of nacre around the intruder and the pearl is born. Man made or cultured pearls are made in exactly the same way but the intruder is manually introduced into the mollusc shell. Pearls are delicate and need care and attention. Follow these simple tips to ensure the highest quality care for your pearl jewellery.
Pearls should be wiped clean on a regular basis with a damp cloth, as they are capable of absorbing dirt, oil secreted from your skin and perfumes and body lotions. When you are gently cleaning your pearls with your damp cloth pay particular attention to drilled holes as this is where as lot of dirt tends to collect. You should never clean your pearls with anything other than a
cloth and water and under no circumstances use any type of detergent to clean them.
In order to preserve your pearls it is wise to protect them from extremes of temperature and also from chemicals, as these can erode the surface of the pearl. Pearls should be stored in a dry box and should be taken out now and again to adjust to humidity. Only put on your pearls when you have finished using your make up and hair spray and never wear then while exercising as sweat can erode them. Also make sure to remove them before swimming or taking a shower.
You can protect your pearls from scratching by storing them separately from other jewellery and gemstones. Try to wrap them in tissue paper or place them in a velvet pouch for extra protection. If your pearl necklace is stretching it is possible to have it re-stringed and this is something that should be considered every two or three years. Simple routines like these mean that your pearls will be in mint condition for years to come.
