The market for handcrafted gold jewellery has always been a vibrant and exciting one, however, in recent times this market has grown as handmade jewellery becomes more and more popular. In the modern age most jewellery was mass produced by jewellery manufacturers and sold to the general public. Many people with some extra money to spend wanted something different and the handcrafted gold jewellery market has really grown.
From ancient times handcrafted jewellery was popular but this was mainly because it was the only method of jewellery manufacture as mass production had not come into being yet. Now as we become a more affluent society people can afford to spend a little extra and had something tailor made. This doesn’t just apply to jewellery but to other commodities as well.
If you are having a piece of jewellery hand made, perhaps you
are designing the piece yourself or collaborating with the designer. Gold is a wonderful and very versatile material for jewellery manufacture. New modern and contemporary use a whole range of different materials to make jewellery but gold is still the firm favourite. Once you choose what type of jewellery you are going to commission, you next have to choose the material and design.
When you approach the designer make sure that you can see a portfolio or his/her work so that you are happy with their designs. The next factor to check into is the quality of the product. Each item that is made should bear a hallmark clearly telling you the grade of gold in the piece and if there are gemstones in the piece, the carat weight of these as well. Having a piece of jewellery hand-crafted to your taste is fantastic but unfortunately if you are not happy with the finished product, it may be harder to exchange it for another one!
