Lapis Lazuli is an ancient stone that has been used by the ancient Egyptians, the Babylonians and the Persians for over 6000 years.

Lapis Lazuli is highly priced for its mystical healing powers and its multi usability as well as its beauty. The name is derived from the Persian word Lazur which means blue stone. The stone is a beautiful deep blue with streaks of white and gold veins that glitter in the light. The stone comprises of three minerals that cause the three colors, the sulfur presence in sodalities is responsible for the blue hue, calcium for the white streaks and pyrite for the gold flecks. The deep the blue the more valuable the gemstone, the richest blue stones with the fewest inclusions are valued most highly and today lower quality specimens are sometimes dyed to improve their appearance.

As well as practical uses such as ornamental carvings, stone clasps and plates the ancient Egyptians used the powdered form of Lapis for paintings and make up. The stone is very porous and soft which makes it easy to manipulate so the Egyptians powdered down the stone into a fine stunning blue press that they used as a pigment for paint and it is even said that Cleopatra used this very powder as eye shadow.

The lapis lazuli is also very well known for its powerful healing and metaphysical properties. It is used in much the same way as crystals in healing and self development. The lumps of Lapis are applied directly to the body to absorb negative energy during meditation and healing sessions. It is said to encourage effective communication, lowers blood pressure, promoting creative flow and psychic senses. A small stone of the lapis can be carried on your person or placed around your living area to encourage positive energy flow. It has become popular as jewelry for this reason also as well as its beauty. Lapis lazuli pendants and rings are very popular among the mystics and the psychic cultures.

All lapis treatments should be carried out in parallel with advice from your doctor on any medical condition these crystals are not a replacement for medicine but an enhancement or an alternative in mild cases. All crystals should be cleansed regularly, and this is easily done by holding the stone under running water, then allowing it to absorb sunlight for several hours, to recharge its energy. Some people also cleanse their stones by placing them in sand, rather than water.
