Topaz has been linked to the setting sun because of its rich and deep colours. The Egyptians thought that the topaz stone was coloured by the mighty sun god Ra. It was because of this belief that topaz became an important stone for amulets, that could protect the wearer against harm. The Romans also had the same belief and associated topaz with the sun god Jupiter.

Normally topaz can be found in an amber colour right through to a peach colour with many different tones of orange in between. There are also very rare topaz stones that have been found in a pale pink and burgundy red colour.

Linked to legend topaz should be worn if you wish to remain clear sighted. It was believed that this stone kept the
wearer free from enchantment and improved eye sight. Taking this a step further the ancient Greeks believed that the stone could make the wearer invisible in times of danger. As an amulet against evil the stone was said to change colour in the presence of rancid food or drink. As for its curative properties, it is said to cure insomnia, asthma and haemorrhages.

Topaz is found all over the world but it is found most commonly in Brazil and Sri Lanka, with pink topaz being found in Pakistan and Russia. Some of you may be familiar with blue topaz, unfortunately this colour does not occur naturally and is created by irridation. Topaz stones should be protected as a single blow to the stone can split it. Topaz is also one of the birthstones for the month of November.
