Amethysts have a special place reserved in the hearts of everyone who encounters them and so it is very fitting that some stones are cut into heart shapes and worn as pendants. For many centuries now, amethyst has been considered a royal colour and understandably very much in demand. Amethyst is actually transparent purple and the most important type of quartz used in the manufacture of jewellery.
The amethyst also has ties to different religions and in Tibet it is considered sacred to Buddha and rosaries care crafted from it. It was and is an important stone in the Christian church and many Catholic bishops still wear amethyst rings to symbolise piety. The name amethyst comes from the Greek word, amethystos, which when translated means not drunk. For this reason it was
believed to symbolise sobriety.
Amethysts also stand for and symbolise love. Legend has it that the Greek God, Dionysius swore revenge on the next mortal that crossed his path, this happened to be Amethyst. In order to save the girl the God Diana turned Amethyst into a statue of crystalline quartz. When Dionysius saw this he wept tears of wine and transformed Amethyst into the stone we know so well. So it seems fitting that amethysts should be fashioned into pendants to remind us of this legend. Amethyst look particularly stunning when set against a contrasting background. This can be best achieved by using white gold or silver or even platinum to set the stone into to. There is plenty of amethyst jewellery available for sale and plenty of different styles of heart pendant so take your time choosing and enjoy the experience.
