Born Patricia Grace in 1929 in Philadelphia she travelled to New York to study at the academy of arts Grace auditioned for many parts, and ultimately became one of Holly woods leading ladies, starring in movies with Cary grant; Jimmy Stewart to name but a few. Although she won the hearts of many a leading man she never really found true romance, until she met and fell in love with a real live prince, at the glamorous canne film festival in 1955.

Prince Rainier of Monaco was one of the world’s famous richest bachelors. Although grace had visited Monaco to film “to catch a thief “with her handsome co star Cary Grant, she and Rainier never met. They met in New York where grace introduced Rainier to some of her Hollywood co stars. It was there that he proposed to grace giving her a friendship ring of rubies and diamonds. Rainier upon seeing the extravagance and the expense of the jewellery of the Hollywood stars decided instead to present Grace with a 12 carat emerald diamond with diamond baguettes on either side.

This seemed a more appropriate ring for a princess to be. Strangely as part of the pre marriage agreement grace had to take a fertility test, and also agree that if ever the two divorced then she would relinquish all right to the children of the
marriage. In April 1956 they married at a civil cerymony with 60guests, in the throne room of the palace. The next day they were married in the cathedral in Monaco witnessed by over 800 guests some of which were the toast of Hollywood, stars like Cary Grant Gloria Swanson, Aristotle Oasis, family, friends and royal dignitaries. Grace presented her husband with a yacht as a wedding present. They thrilled Monaco’s public by driving through the streets after their wedding in a black and cream Rolls Royce. They honeymooned on the royal cruise ship, stopping of in Spain and Corsica, grace was reported to be sea sick frequently.

Grace’s dress was a full length antique lace design with high lace neckline and 30 foot train.

Grace lived happily in Monaco with her husband and three children, Caroline, Albert, and Stephanie. She was only to happy to keep busy doing her royal duties. Grace died tragically in a car accident in Monaco aged 52; ironically she died on the same winding roads where she filmed a high speed car chase scene with Cary Grant many years previous.

The fascination with grace is evident even today, the Hollywood actress who had her pick of Hollywood’s leading men, who married a prince. Grace’s life story was portrayed in a television movie by the equally beautiful Cheryl Ladd. She was an iconic figure of the silver screen. A tribute to grace’s life was held in Sotheby’s in New York in 2007, with family pictures of her , movie clips, her gowns, and her beautiful emerald engagement ring on show.
