Indians Used Different Items Of Ancient Indian Jewelry To Adorn Themselves

In ancient times both men and women wear jewelry to adorn themselves. In ancient times, jewelry symbolized the power and status of the wearer. All of the ancient eras of different cultures had their own jewelry styles. Similarly, ancient Indian jewelry of India has its own different jewelry pieces and styles made with numerous metals. Mostly gold and silver were used for making jewelry during the ancient times of India.

Several kinds of metals, types of jewelry, and the purposes of gemstones are written in the Indian sculptures like Vedas and Mahabharata etc. These ancient types of jewelry are very popular in India today. These are specially ordered on wedding occasion.

In India, earrings are very popular and are pronounced as kamika. These earrings have three distinctive kinds; a simple ring style of earring is named as kundala. Dehri is a rounded disc earring and karnaphul is a flower shaped earring. Bindi is a tiny ornament weared on the forehead between the eyebrows which shows that woman is married.

Gold was preferred to make jewelry in ancient times. The gold made flat and broad necklaces which were inlaid with several precious stones are known as kantha. Or the long necklace acknowledged as lambanam. Bead necklaces were also formed in ancient times and now are the part of running trend in India. Bead necklaces were stringed three to seven times and an amulet was stringed in the centre of beads to prevent evils.

Armlets were called as bajuband. These were made with both gold and silver and were worn on the upper arm. Precious stones were also studded in armlets on important occasions. Bracelets were pronounced as kangan. These bracelets were usually engraved or embedded with precious or semi precious stones.

Girdles were famous as mekhala. These were the hip belts stringed with beads and were made with original red seeds known as kaksha. Thumb or finger rings were also a part of Indian ancient jewelry. These rings were made with gold and crowded together from the central spots of the fingers. Anklets were even made with gold and were common in silver too and named as payal. An ornamental circle embedded with small bells was called ghungru and worn on ankle was popular too.
