Gold is the eternal precious metal that has been used in the manufacture of jewellery for many hundreds of years. Gold is one of the most versatile metals around and can be manipulated to make a range of different jewellery items, among these are gold lockets.
Gold starts its life as pure gold that has a carat weight of twenty four. This weight of gold is quite soft and pliable and easy to make into gold leaf or gold wire, unfortunately, however, it is not durable and definitely not suitable for use as everyday jewellery. In order to make gold suitable for everyday wear alloys are added to the pure gold to strengthen it. Adding alloys to gold can also change its colour depending on the type of metal
alloys that are added. Adding alloys to gold also changes the percentage of pure gold and this is how the different carat value of gold jewellery came about.
Gold lockets are just one type of gold jewellery and they can be as fancy or as simple according to personal taste. Lockets can be sold separately or with a chain and most are sold with a matching chain. Lockets have been popular throughout the ages for holding items such as hair and most recently lockets are used to hold family pictures. In fact, you can get lockets that open almost like the pages of a book to fit in as many pictures as there are family members. A locket is a lovely present to give to a mother with the pictures of her family inside, so she can always have them close to her.
