As the jewelery in our time is used for decoration purpose and fulfilling the need of looking well-groomed, medieval jewelery also played an immense role in enhancing the beauty of dresses and personalities of the people of medieval age. Men were also very conscious of their appearances in the medieval age. Medieval jewellery for men included the items which were not only decorative but also could be used for different functions. The jewelery accessories for men of those ages consisted of some movable jewelery and items that could be put on or sometimes sewn on the dress itself.

The functional jewelery for men in medieval age included cufflinks, buckles, buttons, belts, brooches, hat ornaments etc. These items were especially composed and decorated and were considered a vital accessory for dress fashion in men. In the early medieval ages functional jewelery could only be used as ornamentals.

Head pieces
were very popular in medieval ages; the head pieces comprised of brooches which were used as hat ornaments and were common in affixation of the rim of hats. Brooches were usually of symmetrical or semi-symmetrical shape. Some of them were highly decorated with gems and stones. Cluster brooches and wheel brooches were also a fashion in that era and were considered as medieval jewelery.

Heavily decorated buttons were used by men of medieval ages. They were sewn in the robes and the special jackets of the time. Badges and pendants were used to decorate the dresses of medieval men.

Belts were worn by the medieval age men; at most of the instances they were richly beautified with different precious metals. The costume itself was sometimes decorated by heavy, valuable jewels and stones.

Although medieval men’s jewelery did not count towards ornamentals according to the modern times, the jewelery was considered to be more than worth for any important use.
