Among the standard diamond cutting patterns, the emerald cut is extremely popular, particularly with larger high quality stones, and
loose emerald cut diamonds are prized.
Diamonds are classified and qualified by a combination of several characteristics.
Size, as measured in carats. This is what most people think of first, but it is not always the most important feature. Larger stones are more prone to imperfections that mar the overall appearance.
Color, both from the actual gem and from the way that it affects light passing through the stone's interior or reflected off it's surface.
(Emerald Cut Diamonds - A popular type of diamond)Clarity, which is determined by the number and size of the flaws in and on the diamond.
And finally, cut, which may be the most important factor of all. A well cut diamond will showcase all of the natural highlights of the stone, while minimizing the drawbacks. Even a high quality stone which is improperly cut will lose much of it's value.
The
emerald cut takes it's name from the common rectangular cut used frequently on emeralds. While the simple structure of emeralds and other precious gems severely limit the way that they can be cut, diamonds crystalline structure allow for much greater flexibility.
The large, flat upper surface of the emerald cut diamond is perfect for showing off the clarity of the stone. But flaws are just as easily shown off, so when buying loose emerald cut diamonds, make sure the certification rates it as flawless, or very slightly flawed. (That is, the flaws, both internal and on the surface, are few and can only be seen under high magnification.)
(Emerald Cut Diamonds Rings)While other cut patterns like round, oval heart and marquise are very popular, especially with smaller stones,
loose emerald cut diamonds are unique in their ability to showcase the beautiful depths of a truly fine diamond.
