Of all the precious and semi precious stones, diamonds ranks among the top for variety. This seemingly simple stone can exhibit many faces and forms.
But what are
Different types of diamonds and what makes the difference?
Diamonds are classified by three main characteristics:
Color: This does not always refer to the color of the stone itself, though many diamonds can take on a yellowish hue. But in addition diamonds have a unique molecular and crystalline structure that does wondrous things with the beams of light that work their way through the depths of the stone.
This working of light makes up much of what we call the color of a diamond.
(Different Types Of Diamonds - Size is a factore) Size: This is an important consideration when classifying any stone, and when it
comes to diamonds, size really matters. The larger the stone, the more likely there are to be impurities.
By
cutting away the affected portions of the stone, you improve the quality but reduce the size. This fight between size and flawlessness is part of the angst of the diamond trade.
But
what are Different types of diamonds relative to how they are treated after they are mined. I am referring to the cut.
Most gems are crystals. Strike a crystal just the right way, an pieces break off leaving a smooth surface called a facet. Since these breaks happen along the natural structure of the stones crystalline matrix, there are only so many ways to cut each stone.
(Different Types Of Diamonds - Color Is another factor of classification)Some gems can be cut many ways, most only a few. But the diamond, with it's subtle structure, excels in the number of ways it can be cut.
