The gems and jewellery industry is concerned with the production of gems, diamonds and many types of jewellery. The gems and jewellery industry is a big part of the Indian civilisation. This industry has a vast amount of history. This industry has developed massively in the last three to four decades. This industry has seen a vast amount of exporting mainly between 1966 and 1967.

The gem and jewellery industry can be categorised under four main subcategories, which are polished diamonds, gemstones, gold and jewellery and synthetic. The polished diamonds is one of the biggest markets in the world is the polished diamonds. The polished diamonds are of world class and there are a lot of them that are cut to an exquisite standard. The gem stone jewellery refers to the jewellery that is made of stone rather than diamonds. These gemstones come is to main types there is the precious stones and the semi precious stones. There is a massive demand for the different types of gemstones especially the ruby, sapphire and emeralds. India exports in the region five million carats per year.

The gold and jewellery industry is represented by a lot of the jewellers and it can refer to the manufacturing of jewellery or of various different ornaments. India is one of the largest consumer markets in the world, the gold consumption is about eight hundred and fifty tonnes and this makes up about thirty three per cent of the gold and jewellery industry.

The synthetic stone injury is concerned with the production of diamonds through the use of a physical or chemical process. This work is usually carried out within a laboratory. These synthetic diamonds are a bit like natural diamonds and they are made up of a carbon crystal, which is three-dimensional. The synthetic diamonds are also often referred to as cultured diamonds. The synthetic diamonds are purely an imitation of a real diamond.
