Ceylon Sapphires – The Oldest Treasures of Sapphire Gemstone

The precious gemstone of sapphire has an eternal beauty and it is found in a wide range of colors. Sapphire is mined from various regions of the world including; Thailand, Australia, Burma, India, Pakistan (Kashmir), Cambodia and many other locations around the globe. The quality of sapphire varies from region to region.

Sapphire symbolizes love and loyalty and its connection with crowned heads makes it a symbol of royalty. Romans were very fond of sapphire and old Persians believed that the whole world is lying on a big sapphire. This stone is significant due to its healing powers and the other mystical powers associated with sapphire make it a special and unique gem.

Ceylon sapphires are the oldest treasures found in Ceylon which is now called Sri Lanka. These sapphires are known for their brightness and gleam and can easily be recognized by the jewelers.

As compared to sapphires found in Burma and Kashmir, Ceylon sapphires are inferior in quality. They are rich in water and have a reddish tinge in blue color. Moreover, there is little fire in the stone of Ceylon which is its distinguishing quality. The sapphires of Ceylon are also big in size. A six rayed star is visible in these sapphires but there are steep pyramid faces where the rest of the crystal becomes colorless.

These sapphires of Sri Lanka are found in considerable quantities with true color from the river gravels. They are mostly transparent or of pale color and some are white and parti sapphires, also known as the “Pharaoh’s Eye”.

Sapphire looks magnificent in all the colors and its distinctive characteristic is that it changes its color in different lightings. This is a precious gemstone, however, the cost of the stone depends upon the size, transparency and weight and quality of the stone also determines its value. Ceylon sapphires are quite suitable to be used in jewellery articles.
