When you decide to clean any type of jewellery, whether it is costume jewellery or diamond and gold jewellery, care must be taken as not all cleaners will do the same job and some may even damage your jewellery. Follow our costume jewellery cleaning tips for a successful outcome!

Costume jewellery tends to use crystals and rhinestones in its manufacture and it is extremely important that you know exactly what your costume jewellery is made from before you start to clean it! Whatever it is made from, proceed with care, as imitation stones sometimes need more tender loving care when being cleaned. The first thing to do is to make sure that the stones are free from loose dirt and dust. The best way to do this is to lightly brush them with a very soft bristled brush;
a make up type brush is ideal for this job. If you haven’t got a make up brush or something similar a cotton bud will do the same job. The exception to this is the Aurora Borealis stone, these stones scratch very easy and brushing should be avoided at all costs.

Using the same soft brush you can gently try using a surface cleaner that doesn’t contain wax, some window cleaners are ideal for this job, but read the label! Lightly spray the cleaner onto a clean surface and dip in the brush, then begin cleaning your jewellery carefully. If you put as much care and attention into cleaning your costume jewellery as you do cherishing it, then there is no reason why it shouldn’t last a lifetime.
