Star sapphires are different from other sapphires because of the presence of a reflection of star on its surface. This is the phenomenon of asterism due to which a six rayed star appears on the surface of this gemstone when it is brought under bright light. The star appears due to the tiny crystal inclusions in the stone. Unlike other sapphires and diamonds these sapphires are cut into cabochon cut which is a rounded or smooth doomed shape.

Star sapphires are quite rare and thus are very expensive too. All sapphires are treated by heat and then cut into facets and so the stars cannot be seen on them and this makes them rare. A sapphire is a very tough gemstone and so is quite durable and is regarded as the second most durable stone after diamonds. The transparent look and beautiful shades of sapphires with star makes it more mesmerizing and incredible.
