Steel body jewelry is considered to be the today’s most common item in ornaments. This is because of its affording prices for common man and its easy composition for the manufacturer.
Stainless steel is used for the production of steel body jewelry. The category which is most suitable for body piercing applications and ornaments is 300 series steel, because it is corrosion resistant and free of releasing metal plank into body. Generally there are three forms of steel which are often used in the making of steel jewelry. They are as follows:
• Composition D Implantation Steel
• 316L surgical Steel
• 316LVM Surgical Steel
All these forms of steel are considered to be high grade metals as they themselves are formed by the mixture of few different metals including nickel. In spite of the fact that nickel being harmful for the body at certain instances, it is successful in the manufacture of steel jewelry. The reason
behind this is that nickel does not discharge itself and therefore its dermatitis does not induce contact with the body of the person.
It is thoroughly verified after certain laboratory tests that evolution of nickel is as low as possible, and meet all the biological requirements. Most body jewelry items are electro-polished. Jewelry polishing by manual means is always discouraged as electro-polishing is a much more efficient way and has a higher surface integrity. It is a complicated but classic method to ensure the micro-smoothing of the jewelry and makes the surface ultra smooth and free of unnecessary slits.

The electro polishing activity erodes the thin layer from the surface of the jewelry, resulting the steel body jewelry to be more soft and delicate; thus more desirable to be worn. It is strongly advised that you only buy body jewelry that has been laboratory tested to avoid health complications later on.
