I’ve heard recently that Visa is now offering a Titanium charge card, so there must be something about titanium! Both platinum and titanium are used in the jewellery industry and the use of titanium in jewellery manufacture has risen over the past decade. So when faced with the choice of Titanium –v- Platinum Rings, which one do you decide to buy?
Titanium as a metal is stronger than platinum and fewer people manifest allergic reactions to titanium than other metals. Its more common use is in hip implants! When looking to make a purchase of a ring, if you are on a tight budget, then
Titanium wedding ring is a good choice as it is far cheaper then platinum. This is mainly due to the rarity of the material and as platinum is classified as a precious metal and rare in relation
to titanium it is naturally more expensive. So why isn’t titanium much cheaper if it is so abundant? Well, one theory is that it is abundant on the earth’s crust but it is expensive to mine! There’s always a downside!
For this reason directly comparing titanium and platinum would be like trying to make a comparison between Indian and Chinese food! It’s just not possible, all you can do it look at the advantages and disadvantages of both and weight these up against what you want. Platinum does have one distinct advantage over titanium and that is that it does not oxidise. Under high temperatures titanium will oxidise. It would also hold more prestige to be able to pass on platinum rings and jewellery through the family, rather than titanium. If you like modern and contemporary than titanium is your choice or conversely if you prefer a timeless ring then definitely opt for platinum.
