Is it necessary to get information on the jewellery industry to be sure that what you are buying is genuine? It is a least important for buyers to always make their purchases from a reputable dealer to ensure that they are getting a high quality product. However, who actually keeps an eye on the jewellers themselves? This is where information on the jewellery industry is key to making a confident purchase. Usually jewellers who are members of regulating bodies are only too happy to display their membership openly.

The governing body for the jewellery is the World Jewellery Confederation. They have set up a Code of Ethics to inspire consumer confidence in the industry. Basically for each and every member who follows this code, it should ensure that best practice
is observed. The Code of Ethics covers different areas of jewellery purchasing. It states that the consumer will probably have limited knowledge about gemstones and are reliant on the jeweller to guide them in their purchase. The jeweller must employ his or her technical expertise to explain fully the details in relation to cut, clarity, colour and carat of the gemstone. This is important for the jewellery industry to maintain its standards and integrity.

A jeweller must under the Code of Ethics describe gemstones fully and state whether they are natural or manmade, any else would be contrary to the interests of the consumer. Having a body in place to set standards is a sensible idea. However, it is up to the individual jeweller to make sure that these standards are met. If in doubt, go to another supplier!
